Berwyn Annual Healthy Heart Fair makes a change

By Elisa Juliano

Berwyn’s annual Healthy Heart Fair will not include a blood drive this year.

“This will be the first Healthy Heart Fair where we don’t have a blood drive,” said Tina Kloess, the registered nurse of the Berwyn Public Health District.

Kloess explained that it was too difficult for participants to fast 12 hours before their appointments and then donate blood.

“To give blood you need to make sure you’ve had a nice meal and are well hydrated,” said Kloess.

Kloess said that a blood drive would be held in the future.

Each year Berwyn’s Public Health District hosts a fair in February to promote heart health awareness. The fair is only open to Berwyn residents and is free.

Participants undergo screenings for hemoglobin and glucose levels. Staff and physicians also take body mass index and blood pressure readings, as well as height and weight measurements.

Kloess stated the fair is important because not everyone has health insurance or is aware of problems like “high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels.”

“It’s a step in the right direction for them,” said Kloess.

The Healthy Heart Fair will take place on Feb. 8 at the offices of the Berwyn Public Health District located at 6600 26th St. The fair will take place between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
